    Description genre

    "Plantes monoïques ou polygames. Périgone herbacé, à 3-5 divisions dans les fleurs mâles et hermaphrodite et à 2 valves opposées dans les fleurs femelles. Etamines 3-5. Styles 2, filiformes soudés à la base. Fruit membraneux, ovoïde, comprimé dans les 2 valves accrescentes du périgone, nues ou munies d'appendices dorsaux. Graine verticale dans les fleurs femelles horizontale dans les fleurs hermaphrodites, lenticulaire, noire ou brune.

    Grand arbrisseau dioïque très rameux au feuillage blanc argenté et persistant, buissonnante au port irrégulier pouvant atteindre 3 mètres de hauteur.

    Tiges rameaux dressés
    Feuilles alternes, brièvement pétiolées; tantôt grandes atteignant 5-6 cm, tantôt très petites , très polymorphes: tantôt orbiculaires, ovées ou lancéolées, tantôt deltoïdes, hastées ou rhomboïdales, généralement entières, à sommet obtus, rarement dentées, un peu charnues.
    Fleurs très petites cachées entre les bractées, en long glomérule minuscules de couleur jaune, unisexuées.
    Inflorescence parnicule terminale raide. nue ou un peu feuillée à la base, de 20-50 cm de long, composée d'épis denses de fleurs jaunâtres.
    Fruits valves fructifères coriaces, généralement réniformes, à bords très entiers, lisses sur le dos.

    Utilisations générales

    "Elle est cultivée pour l'ornementation des bords de la route, des espaces verts et des jardins. Elle forme des haies protectrices dans les jardins de bord de mer. Elle est appétée par tous les herbivores surtout les chèvres et les dromadaires. Cette espèce est consommée par les oiseaux marins vue la richesse de son feuillage en substances nutritives et est utilisée dans l’alimentation de l’homme au moment des disettes graves: pour la préparation d'un couscous spécial, la « bethboutha» à Gafsa et le « mesfouf » à Mednine où on disait que : « celui qui a le « Gtaf » n’aura jamais faim ». Les graines étaient récoltées, écrasées au mortier de bois et consommées en galette ou bouillies.

    Utilisations médicinales

    "La plante traite les inflammations et présente quelques intérêts pour soigner les plaies. Elle est utilisée en décoction contre le froid et le rhume, contre les vers intestinaux, l’arythmie cardiaque.
